What are they and how you can avoid project hangups. Before you turn in your next project, please, consider the following.
Whenever you want any product that extends to the very edge of a finished piece, like this, whether it be a full background or even just a line, bleeds are required to get that cut just right. Bleeds are the borders around your artwork that are cut into so that your artwork will extend to the very edge of the finished, cut piece. A safezone is an area within your artwork that is safest from being cut. This is to avoid any important information such as your phone number, address, or even your logo from being clipped.
For the most part, bleeds extend away from the finished piece size by about an eighth of an inch all the way around, so in the end, the finished art ends up being about a quarter inch bigger than the finished piece. For example, if you have a business card which normally measures 3.5 by 2 inches, your design canvas should be 3.75 by 2.25 inches at 300dpi. You should design everything within about an eighth of an inch from the edge of the piece to stay within those safezone boundaries.
Imagine being handed a photo on a sheet of paper and being asked to cut it out with scissors. Naturally, you’ll want to cut in to the photo just a little to avoid getting the white around the photo. That little bit you’re cutting into are the bleeds.
Let’s take a look at this piece. It was designed as a letter size menu, or 8.5 by 11 inches. This piece has no bleeds and has text that does not stay within its safezones. Upon printing, the piece becomes very difficult to cut without either getting the white of the paper or the text inside.
Now, here’s the same piece again but this time, we’ve added bleeds and have kept all our text and important information within the safezones. This is the ideal piece. All the text will be safe, and the edges will have a nice, crisp edge.
If you’re ever in doubt, you can always request a template from your printer. These templates will have the three zones outlined or highlighted and will already be in the right DPI. Just open the template in your art program and design away. Always remember to cover the entirety of the template with your design.
